The Academy provides a program of excellence while developing each student’s highest potential in intellect, character, and physical well being. From entering our Reggio Emilia – inspired PreK to a layered foundation through Eighth Grade, our students’ experiences are guided by our core values of pursuing knowledge, building community, and serving others. SJA graduates are well-prepared to become citizens in a global society.
St. James Academy students learn key success skills such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. They are encouraged to share their thoughts, work in teams or independently, especially when working on Project Based Learning activities. PBL emphasizes active engagement in meaningful real-world projects, and our students are encouraged to discover knowledge through intrinsically motivating projects that give the children a purpose to their learning. Units begin with an entry event, led by an outside expert, who shares an issue with a core driving question. This question provides an opportunity for students to take on roles, plan, and manage uncertainties. We end the units with a public presentation of the product—often to the returning expert— with parents attending.
To further enhance literacy and invest in the arts, the school sponsors an artist-in-residence program and a visiting author series. The Middle School athletics program offers students the opportunity to choose from nine competitive sports.
