Part Time Learning Support Position – Approximately 24 hours per week
Academic Resource Overview: The purpose of Academic Resource at St. James Academy is to provide additional academic support within a challenging curriculum. All classroom teachers are mindful of the gifts and challenges that students bring to the classroom. Therefore, the first step to intervention, be it academic support or extension, begins there. The Academic Resource Team works closely with classroom teachers to structure lessons that meet students where they are and stretch them at their comfort level. When circumstances dictate, students may work with a member of the Resource Team in a small group setting. Duration of resource support may be short term or long term and is based on individual need as determined by the Resource Team, Division Heads, teachers, parents, and outside professionals. The curriculum and goals guide group work may vary in relation to the academic division.
Middle School Level: During the Middle School years, students move from a self-contained classroom environment to a block schedule where they will meet a number of different teachers each day. Solid reading comprehension and writing skills are paramount to success. In addition, time management and organization skills are necessary for completing long-term assignments. Students are educated and encouraged to be mindful of personal learning styles as they approach daily assignments. Middle School teachers support effective study techniques within their curriculum.
Additional Responsibility: As a member of the resource team, this individual will monitor student educational evaluations, work with teachers to address ways in which student strengths and weaknesses can be addressed within the classroom setting, educate the community on evidence-based research applicable to teaching and learning, administer in-house screening/assessment if beneficial.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements: Experience and training in language-based learning differences or a comparable field. Experience in an independent school is particularly desirable.
