A Message from our Head of School

Karl
Each fall I sit down with 8th grade students and we discuss how their years at St. James Academy have influenced them. Students reflect on their experiences at the school and they say things like “I love this school,” “my teachers really take an interest in me,” and “I feel safe to take risks.” Students speak with confidence and poise, and they seem curious and joyful. In these conversations, we inevitably end up speaking about the school’s sense of community being a key factor in their success. At St. James Academy, teachers and parents come together to create a nurturing environment where students feel supported as they develop intellectually, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

As you explore our site, pay close attention to our academic program, which includes accelerated programs in math and reading, technology integrated with i-Pads, a laptop program, Lego Robotics,  smartboards, and design software for our 3-D printer. World languages, French and Spanish, begin in Kindergarten at St. James Academy. The arts program includes visual art classes, chorus, band, instrumental lessons, and three after-school musicals per year. We have a well-designed physical education program, plus interscholastic athletics and recreation council teams for all ages. Students at St. James Academy attend weekly Chapel service and participate in a faith development course. The school sponsors artist-in-residence programs and a visiting author series. St. James Academy also is proud to be one of the few designated International Baccalaureate Schools with the Middle Years Programme.

Please note the importance of our Kindergarten through Eighth Grade model. We believe that this structure allows students to develop fully while helping them to maintain a sense of innocence and wonder. We celebrate within our community with picnics, traditions and performances that include the whole family. At the same time, older students are given responsibility and opportunities for leadership. This experience instills in our graduates a level of maturity that prepares them for an array of high school options and for future success at colleges and universities.

We would be happy to have you visit St. James Academy. We have a beautiful campus, with expansive views of historic My Lady’s Manor in Monkton Maryland. A typical school day is full of joy, songs, experiments, stories, field trips, and play. Come visit and learn more about our amazing school.
