 Mission Statement

St. James Academy offers, in a Christian environment, a program meeting the intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual, and physical needs of its student body preparing each individual student, not only for the demands of higher education, but for living a creative, humane and compassionate life worthy of a child of God and a contributing member of society.

 History

St. James Academy, a mission of Saint James Episcopal Church, was originally founded in 1821. It was reestablished in 1957 by church and community leaders who recognized the need for an excellent Christian education for children in Kindergarten through Grade 8. Founding leaders envisioned a school with high academic standards and an emphasis on religious values that stressed responsibility to the greater community.

 Objectives
  • To provide for the development of the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical, and social growth of each individual student.
  • To maintain a positive environment and caring atmosphere that nurture close interpersonal relationships.
  • To provide opportunities for students to achieve their full potential.
  • To expose the children to language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, foreign language, performing and visual arts, religious instruction, physical education, and information technology to encourage each student to become self-motivated and well-rounded.
  • To enable students to become life long learners and apply knowledge in everyday situations.
 Goals

As responsible stewards, the Academy's Board of Trustees and the Vestry of Saint James Church have identified several vital needs to uphold our tradition of excellence. We are committed to:

  • maintaining the well-deserved reputation of the Academy as a strong, viable independent K-8 school offering one of the finest academic and spiritual educations in the area;
  • providing safe, suitable and dedicated space for physical education, fitness conditioning and team sports for all children; enhancing our instrumental and vocal music, and dramatic arts programs to educate, expand and appreciate the potential of each child; focusing on individual needs through flexible classroom space for small group instruction, a hallmark of the Academy;
  • and providing additional space for Church and community use through the St. James Center, a spiritual, education, athletic and performing arts center to serve as a gathering place for the entire St. James community. The center is designed as an inspirational witness to our presence in within the community.
As with all endeavors at St. James, we are supported by a strong volunteer base. It is through the efforts of the entire community that the Academy begins the new century with an expanded facility and excellent programs to serve children, families, and friends of the St. James' community.

 Where We Excel
Those involved in the St. James' community believe that this is a special place. Parents are enthusiastic about the educational program, the dedication of the faculty, and the caring and considerate atmosphere, as expressed in their commitment and contributions of time, talent, and treasure to the school. The faculty further solidifies this feeling through their individual dedication and commitment to the children. The administration continually redresses the individual elements of the education program while assuring the well-being of the whole. And, finally, ask our children - see their faces, hear them laugh, watch them grow! The successes of our children are the true exemplar of our combined efforts.
