What might a student need a counselor for at school?

  • If you have a worry that keeps you from being able to concentrate in school;
  • If you are having problems with your friends that you and your parents just can't seem to figure out;
  • If you are upset about something and are having trouble treating others respectfully;
  • If you need some new ideas about how to handle something that is bothering you:
  • If you feel so sad or upset that you are having trouble eating or sleeping;
  • If you are not sure who will help you with something.

If I have a worry what should I do?
  • Talk with your parents. Parents usually have really good ideas, they have tons of experience with life. If you and your parents run out of ideas, then;
  • Look for books or websites about the topic (some are listed below);
  • Tell your teacher, especially if it is a worry about school, he or she might have helped a zillion other students with your concern. If that doesn't seem like a good idea, or you and your teacher are stuck, then;
  • Get a message to me:
    • Call me - 410-771-4816  You can leave me a message, even at night! Try it, it just might help you sleep, and a good night's sleep might help your brain with an idea.
    • Leave me a note in my office mailbox or the one outside my door.
    • Ask your mom or dad to contact me.
    • Ask your teacher to contact me.
Where is Mrs. Rowan's room?

Right across from Mrs. Fowler's room, or;
In the hallway that also holds the school store and the lower school art room but towards the office, or;
Heading from the nurse's room toward the snack machines, halfway there it's on the left, or;
Look for a room with a huge grayish couch and poppies on the door.

What might I do if someone is being mean or disrespectful to me?

If it's one time:

  • you might ignore it,
  • you might let that person know you didn't like what he/she did,
  • you might walk away and find something else to do or something else to think about.

If it's repeated (you decide what order to try these ideas):

  • Read some of the books listed below with your parents,
  • Try some of the ideas in the books, pick ones that you really could see yourself trying,
  • Tell the person to STOP,
  • Tell the person if they do not stop you will have to let someone else know what is going on,
  • Be strong, we cannot let someone rule us with disrespectful behavior and our own fear, TELL SOMEONE!!
  • Come see me, your teacher, Mr. Buck, or Dr. Legenhausen. We will help you figure out what to do and we have lots of experience and ideas for how we can help, too.
