Course Description
Overview:
In Year 3 physical education skill acquisition, training, fitness, sportsmanship and individual performance are understood. Each student is expected to cooperate and encourage others to participate at the highest level of his/her ability.
The Year 3 athletic program provides an opportunity for students to participate in an extensive interscholastic sports program at the advanced Grade 7 – 8 level, enhanced skill development and team strategies are expected. Being a risk taker, as well as self-confident is encouraged.
Students have firmly developed an appreciation and understanding for the value of physical education and its relationship to a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
An all school Field Day is planned each spring to celebrate student growth, development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Topics Covered:
Soccer, indoor soccer, field hockey, rope jumping, basketball, flag football, volleyball, tennis, cross country running, Presidential Physical Fitness Test, lawn sports, kickball, juggling, frisbee, scooter hockey, and dodgeball.
Formative Assessment:
Reflections written and/or oral, the motivation to participate fully in all aspects of physical education, the skills and understanding necessary to participate successfully in a variety of physical activities, cooperative learning, practicing, refining, adapting, thinking, interacting.
Summative Assessment:
Reaching optimal level of physical fitness, performance assessment, MYP projects

IB MYP Year 3 Aims and Objectives:
At the end of the year 3, students should be able to:
• understand the principles that contribute to fitness, and their importance in various contexts;
• use their knowledge to identify and analyze factors that influence situations, and solve problems in familiar and simple unfamiliar situations;
• explore movement possibilities and variations in accordance with the basic principles of a particular aesthetic activity;
• demonstrate the skills and techniques necessary for active participation in some more complex performance situations in a variety of physical activities;
• apply tactics, strategies and rules in some more complex performance environments in both individual and group situations;
• communicate effectively, including basic verbal and nonverbal forms of communication;
• understand and demonstrate attitudes and strategies that support and encourage others;
• show respect and sensitivity to their own and different cultures;
• make an informed reflection upon their own achievements;
• understand simple goals to enhance learning and take action towards achieving them;
• demonstrate an understanding of the various principles that contribute to fitness, and their importance in various contexts;
• use their knowledge to analyze situations and solve problems.
