WORLD LANGUAGE - MIDDLE SCHOOL

FRENCH and SPANISH 

Each student elects upon faculty recommendation or availability of course either French or Spanish for Middle School study.

 OVERVIEW

 Number of faculty: Two 

In the French/Spanish curriculum at St. James Academy oral communication is stressed; and the students rapidly learn to express themselves by speaking French/Spanish using vocabulary rich practical everyday language. Each classroom unit builds on skills used in prior units. Role-playing and dialogue supplement written and oral drills and exercises. Audiovisual materials are employed to improve the students' listening skills. Grammar and writing skills are acquired to complement French/Spanish conversation. In addition to language acquisition, students explore the diversity of other cultures, as well as customs and holidays. 

GOALS: GRADES SIX - EIGHT

Students will: 

• Work toward a proficiency in the four basic language skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French or Spanish;
• Increase their knowledge and appreciation of the diverse cultures of the countries that speak French and Spanish;
• Practice and apply the vocabulary and structures of the language through peer interactions, conversations, and teacher evaluation;
