SIXTH GRADE ENGLISH

GRADING

English grading will consist of an average received in the four components listed above: Literature, Composition, Grammar, and Vocabulary. 

TESTS

Weekly tests will be given in vocabulary. Testing for each novel will occur at completion. Grammar tests will be given after each area studied. Pop and/or announced quizzes may be given in literature and grammar. 

HOMEWORK

Homework is posted in the room on the chalkboard and on Mrs. Cottle's Moodle site. Parents/students should expect weekly English homework in vocabulary. Various composition assignments will be given throughout the year. Assignments will be given on Monday and collected on Friday. Grammar and literature assignments will be given several times a week and may be due the following day. Other assignments will require several nights for completion.

 

BOOK PROJECTS

Students should be reading books outside of school on a regular basis. Book Projects on outside reading will be assigned approximately every six weeks. A schedule with dates and projects has been distributed to each student and is available on the homework site.

Composition:

            6 + 1 Traits of Writing

            Fundamental essay writing

            Analytical essays in response to poetry

            Original myth writing

            Focused Free Writing (FFW)

            Various additional writing assignments

Grammar:

Rules of the Game #1  (Grammar workbook with lessons and assignments). Grammar Journal: A marble composition book is required for grammar journals. All grammar notes should be kept in this journal and reviewed before all tests and exams.

Vocabulary:  

            Wordly Wise Book 8

            Exercises in booklet with weekly vocabulary tests.
